“Contains Lactobacillus reuteri” sounds specific. But in probiotic research, that sentence alone tells you less than you might think.
Lactobacillus reuteri is a species — a broad category. Within that species are many different strains, each with its own genetic profile and, often, its own distinct effects.
Clinical trials are conducted on specific, identified strains — not on the species as a whole. A finding for one L. reuteri strain doesn't automatically apply to a different L. reuteri strain.
The clearest labels include a strain identifier, often a code like DSM 17938 or a similar designation, alongside the species name. When that's missing, you can't verify the product matches the strain used in published research.
